Who says the Internet is only for young people?
Connecting in the 21st Century

By Kerry Noone, Marketing Communications Specialist

It’s a crowded world and everyone is vying for attention and the question is how do you stand out in a crowd? Recently, businesses including Sodexo, have been paying a great deal of attention to social media and social networks because it is becoming one of the most popular forms of communication among all generations not just the young. What was once thought to be a way for teens and college students to socialize on the internet, social networks have quickly turned into much more and are commonly used as networking tools for professionals.

People of all ages are using these tools to connect and communicate professionally with not only colleagues but also past, present and future employers. The latest trends in online social networking are not a fad, they are here to stay. Society is changing rapidly and we are changing with it every step of the way.

Not only are we offering current Sodexo employees a place to join their co-workers online, over the past 12 months, many of our recruiters have discovered the potential of social networking sites as a source of finding new talent. Finding the passive jobseeker who, while not looking for a new position today, may be an ideal candidate tomorrow has been motivation enough for our recruiters. And, for the potential employee, social networks allow you to be seen. They allow you to tell your own story. They allow you access to companies who are hiring and they allow you to get to know the company before you join the team.

Social media is a vital part of online communication. Not only do these sites allow recruiters to search for talent, they also give us a powerful vehicle for strengthening our employer brand and to take control of our online web presence. We are using these sites to communicate what it would be like to work at Sodexo with potential employee and to maintain an open line of communication with current employees.

Social media tools allow us to connect on an individual basis with potential candidates and employees and to make the connection personal. With more than 120,000 employees across the United States, you probably think of Sodexo as a huge organization where personal experiences are few and far between. But if you take a peek behind the curtain, you'll find a group of individuals working hard to make every day a better day for the people we serve.
