Sodexo Leads the Way in Reducing Carbon Footprints on College Campuses
By Scott Sherman, Recruitment Manager, Facilities Services & IT
 |
Campus dining facility heated and cooled by Sodexo geothermal system reduces carbon footprint. |
In 2006, 12 college and university presidents launched the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, asking their colleagues across the nation to commit to eliminating their campuses’ greenhouse emissions. To date, 629 presidents have signed the commitment. This inspired considerable demand for sustainable facilities solutions and a wonderful opportunity for Sodexo to further serve our customers.
Sodexo responded to the objectives of the Presidents Climate Commitment Letter by developing for our educational clients a carbon footprint service that measures and helps reduce carbon emissions. We are able to go onto a college campus and tell a client what their carbon footprint is currently and how they can reduce their overall carbon footprint by looking at dining halls, waste, transportation and energy-related emissions. Sodexo Joins in the Memorial Day Remembrance
By Angela Guidroz, Military Sourcing Recruitment Manager
On May 5, 1868, three years after the Civil War ended, the head of the Union veterans organization established Decoration Day, which is now known as our Memorial Day. It was established for the reconciliation and coming together of a nation that was war-torn and mourning their sons and daughters.
In 1915, after viewing row after row of soldiers' graves at Flanders’ battlefield in the northern region of France, World War I Colonel John McCrae wrote the very moving poem, "In Flanders Fields" as a tribute to the fallen. The poem’s first lines led to the poppy becoming a visual image of those who had given their lives in war. Read more »

Sodexo Volunteers Help Feed the Souls of the City
By Tami Carter-McNulty, Senior Recruiter
Each year, as part of Sodexo’s annual Servathon, thousands of our employees come together for the greater good of the community to provide a better way of life for someone in need. Our Servathon spans the entire month of April and includes volunteer events throughout the country. Employees volunteer their time to create fundraisers, food drives and various projects around fighting hunger everywhere.
Relying on volunteers for such events is at the heart of D.C. Central Kitchen, a facility centered on feeding those less fortunate. D.C. Central Kitchen is a central location to recover unused food, prepare and deliver meals to partner social service agencies, and train and employ homeless men and women for the food service industry. They recycle over one ton of surplus food each day that would otherwise go to waste and turn it into 4,500 daily, nutritious meals for the greater Washington, D.C. region. Read more »

By Darla Mayse, Senior Recruiter
 |
Ulysse Charles |
At the 2008 National Society of Minorities in Hospitality Conference (NSMH), Ulysse and a few of his classmates were having lunch when they noticed a student sitting alone at the next table. As hospitality students, they thought it only fitting to ask him to join them at their table. That "student" turned out to be Sodexo Senior Recruiter Shane Tirpak. Shane answered questions and shared with them information about Sodexo and its Future Leaders Internship Program. "Sodexo’s mission and values aligned with my mission and values, and I wanted to know how I could become a part of company," says Ulysse. Shane connected him with Michelle Thomas, Senior Manager of Diversity and Internship Coordinator. He submitted his application and was offered an internship. Read more »

Sodexo Adds a Seventh Network Group for Employees
By Kerry Noone, Marketing Communications Manager
Today's workplace is made up of employees from four generations: the Traditional Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y/Millennials. Each group has its own attitudes, behaviors, expectations and motivations, which are primarily based on life experiences of that generation. Whether you're applying for a job, speaking to clients, pitching a new idea to your boss, or leading a team, awareness of generational differences will help you achieve success.
A study conducted by the Center for Creative Leadership discovered that many of the assumptions made about each generation were exaggerated, resulting in the so-called "generation gap" and thus causing misunderstandings and miscommunication between the generations. To successfully integrate these generations into the workplace, companies like Sodexo are creating a corporate culture that actively promotes diversity and respect for its multi-generational workforce.
