"Meatless Monday" Aims to Reduce Americans’ Risk of Heart Disease, Cancer and Diabetes
By Susan Laramee, Recruiting Manager, Clinical

Originally begun as a movement to reduce meat consumption in the U.S., Meatless Monday has become a popular trend throughout the U.S.

Meatless Monday was developed by the non-profit organization Monday Campaigns in partnership with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. Monday Campaigns is a national movement to dedicate the first day of every week to health. Therefore, Meatless Monday was born from a recommendation in the Healthy People 2010 report that indicated Americans need to reduce their intake of saturated fat (the type of fat found in many dairy and meat products).

Sodexo supports Meatless Monday at a number of senior living communities, college and school sites, more than 900 hospitals, and 2,000 corporate and government client locations in North America, including Toyota, Northern Trust Bank and the U.S. Department of the Interior.

For more information on vegetarian menus and diets, resources are available from the American Dietetic Association, EatingWell Magazine and the Meatless Monday website.
